BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – One of the most critical departments at a Berkeley County hospital undergoing a major expansion is set to open Monday.
Construction is in full swing at Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, which plans to unveil its expanded emergency room. The new facility adds 21 new treatment bays, more than doubling the department’s treatment areas from 14 to 35.
The hospital has already added six new facilities as it enters the second month of a 10-month project. Last month, the hospital opened its new pharmacy, lab and both preoperative and post-anesthesia care units.
A mammogram center, a wound care clinic and expanded imaging services are set to open this month.
Roper St. Francis officials say expanding the ER was a top priority. The ER is the hospital’s busiest department but had the smallest capacity before the latest expansion.
Roper St. Francis Hospital is the only hospital serving all of Berkeley County.
Next month, the hospital plans to expand its cardiovascular services.
The full project is expected to be complete in April 2026.
