Renewing Your Child’s Passport Overseas: You are living in the Dominican Republic, and you need to renew your child’s passport – what should you do? Firstly, be aware that the process for renewing your child’s U.S. passport is different than renewing an adult passport. In most cases, your child must appear in person at the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo or at the U.S. Consular Agency in Puerto Plata. Children under the age of 16 must apply using Form DS-11 rather than the adult renewal form (DS-82).
For children under 16, both parents or legal guardians generally need to participate in the application, either by attending the interview together or by providing appropriate consent or custody documentation. Applicants aged 16 and 17 can sign their own passport application with at least one parent signing as well, but parental awareness or consent may still be required.
On the day of the appointment, each parent should bring a valid form of identification and proof of their relationship to the child, most commonly a birth certificate. Please note, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad is not proof of the child’s legal parents or custody.
If your child’s appearance has changed significantly since their last passport application, you may be required to show photos of their progression from then to the present time. Photos on a cellular phone are acceptable.
Remember, children’s passports are valid for five years rather than 10 years. Check the passport validity of all travelers well before your scheduled trip! If you have travel in the next two weeks and your child’s passport is expired, you may be eligible for an emergency passport. To apply for one, make the first available appointment for a passport on the Embassy website, then follow instructions to request an emergency passport. Please be aware that the Embassy will do its best to accommodate your emergency travel plans.
