Behind the Scenes
From the start, CEO Bonnie Holland made it clear that the Extra Inning Softball app would be built with input from both the softball community and fresh creative minds. Between January and May 2025, she worked closely with newly graduated Boise State University students — Mark Muench, Colton Gordon, Emma Gifford, and Kadon Boldt, — before handing the project over to Boise-based app developer, Dustin Blad, to bring it across the finish line.
To capture the full story behind the app’s creation, we spoke with the team that helped bring it to life — from the newly graduated Boise State University developers who laid the groundwork to the app builder who turned their vision into a polished, user-ready platform.

Emma Gifford – BSU Developer
Q: What did you learn from this project that you will take with you into your future career?
Emma: “I learned the importance of focusing on soft skills more than technical ones. The need for clear communication and conflict resolution was important for our team. Without this skill, it was difficult to have a clear idea of what needed to be accomplished and to plan a roadmap to get there. Building up these abilities in our team also built trust between us and I found it was important to remember I was not working on the project alone. Every team is unique and must figure out how to work together….even if they already know each other!”
Colton Gordon– BSU Developer
Q: How do you think the app will improve user experience in the softball community?
Colton: “Before the app, fans had to search through several web pages to find updates and stats about their favorite players and teams. Now, with just a tap, users have instant access to real-time news, player statistics, and upcoming events. The app also delivers personalized notifications, making it easier than ever for the softball community to stay connected, informed, and engaged. Growing up as a baseball player, I would have loved something like this to stay connected and better track my performance. It’s a game-changer for the entire softball community.
Mark Muench – BSU Developer
Q: What’s one feature you are most proud of helping to create?
Mark: “My favorite projects are the ones that don’t just work well, but also look and feel great. I loved shaping the app’s design and user-flow to give softball fans quick and easy access to what matters most. From fine-tuning logos and colors to making the interface sleek, professional, and fun. Every detail was worth the effort. I’m incredibly grateful to Extra Inning Softball, my team, and Boise State University for the chance to create something with a meaningful impact.”
Kadon Boldt – BSU Developer
Q: What was it like collaborating as a student team on a project that would reach a national sports audience?
Kadon: “It was a very exciting experience to be able to work on something with such a wide scope, especially as eager young college students ready to take on a real development challenge. There were definitely times where we felt the pressure of the app’s scale, but I think that ultimately pushed us to put our best foot forward and delivery something that truly demonstrated our skills and ability to collaborate. My team was amazing and I really loved working with each and every one of them.”

Dustin: “This app puts Extra Inning Softball in your pocket. The app brings together trusted reporting, Rising Stars features, rankings, and real-time notifications and customizable feed – so every parent and athlete stays ahead of the news that matters most during their softball journey.”
Leadership Vision for EIS
As the driving force behind Extra Inning Softball’s growth, Bonnie Holland sees the app as more than just a new tool — it’s a milestone in a long-term plan to keep EIS at the forefront of the sport. Her journey to sole ownership has been marked by bold moves and a commitment to innovation.
Bonnie Holland: Owner and CEO of Extra Inning Softball
“I was there the day Extra Inning Softball launched in 2018. From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to build an app — it’s been part of my vision for years. As the sole owner now, I have the freedom to move forward without constraints, and this was one of the biggest steps yet. It’s important to stay ahead of trends, not behind them. As a media company, we have a responsibility to lead the way in technology for our sport.”
“We’ve already started shifting our platform to a more digitalized approach with features like Madness Mondays, Wisdom Wednesdays, Faith Fridays, and Voices from the Field interviews with players, coaches, and leaders across the game. This app is just one piece of a much bigger plan. It’s not even our first major improvement — last summer we announced our proprietary rankings software, which has transformed the way we evaluate talent. We will continue to move forward and lead the industry for girls’ fastpitch softball, ages 8U through 18U. We’re not done yet — I have other big projects in the making. Just wait and see.” — Bonnie Holland, CEO, Extra Inning Softball
