MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners has announced on its Facebook page when the SS United States will be deployed to become an artificial reef.

The SS United States is one step closer to becoming the World’s Largest Artificial Reef.
The vessel will be deployed in the Gulf about 22 NM southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, the second week of November 2026. This activity is weather-dependent and dates may change.
The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners is working with our safety and security partners for a safe and efficient deployment.
This is an exciting move forward to create a one-of-a-kind resource for the environment and for our tourism industry.
