Bill van Zyll, VP and general manager for Nintendo in Latin America, has spoken more about physical media – and confirmed that there aren’t any plans to ditch that format.
Many know at this point that there’s been a shift from physical to digital titles. On top of that, PlayStation will soon be abandoning physical games entirely. That has led to plenty of discussions about the future. Thankfully, on the Nintendo side of things, there are no plans for significant changes.
Zyll said in an interview with Coelho that Nintendo doesn’t have any plans to ditch physical releases. He also acknowledged that fans are very much interested in that format.
His full words are as follows:
“Historically, we’ve been very agnostic, right? We go off what the consumer prefers, and take that into account very heavily. We also have a platform that was just launched. We’re barely just over a year into NS2. It’s got both digital and physical – that capability. There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has been to be agnostic.”
On Nintendo Switch 2, physical comes in two forms: full cartridge and game-key cards. The latter hasn’t been a hit with passionate collectors. That said, we did hear that game-key card sales have increased by 631 percent in the U.S., so they aren’t being ignored.
Games distributed by Nintendo have largely been proper physical titles. However, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition will be a game-key card.
