MITCHELL COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Mitchell County’s own version of Halloween, known as Hilloween, kicked off on Oct. 16 with a scary story and a lot of books.
News 13 Meteorologist Karen Wynne was a celebrity reader at the book distribution event at Harris Middle School. Wynne said she enjoyed sharing the story “Creepy Carrots” by Aaron Reynolds.

This year, Hilloween’s book distribution has grown substantially. Every Mitchell County student from Pre-K through second grade received four books at the event, compared to two books in previous years.
In total, each of those students will get 12 books over the course of the year, thanks to the Hilloween Foundation.
