In moves announced hours apart Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins assigned spare defenseman Ryan Johnson to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, then recalled defenseman Ilya Solovyov from WBS.

The Johnson move opened a roster spot but the team didn’t fill it until later in the day. Adding to the curious timing of the moves, Penguins left-handed defenseman Sam Girard was injured in the second period Saturday in the team’s 6-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights and did not return.

Girard slammed hard into the end wall and lay on the ice, seeming dazed.

The Penguins acquired Johnson last week in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for defensemen Caleb Johnson and Daniel Laatsch.

Solovyov cleared waivers and was sent to WBS earlier this month after not cracking the NHL lineup.

The Penguins will try to salvage a win, or at least a point, on their four-game road trip Monday when they play the Mammoth in Salt Lake City before heading home.
