BYU’s historic upset victory over Notre Dame has resulted in the program’s best poll position in decades.
The Cougars have jumped six spots to No. 2 in Sunday’s latest AP top 25, marking their highest ranking since finishing at No. 5 in 1996.
Only in its 1984 national championship campaign has BYU been ranked higher than it is now. The Cougars also received 20 first place votes, their first such votes since 1990, compared to 40 for new No. 1 Miami.
Utah, fresh off its sixth straight victory with a win over Colorado, moved up a spot to No. 10.
Other Big 12 schools in the rankings are No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 14 Houston and No. 25 Arizona, with Oklahoma State now the first team out of the poll.
Notre Dame, upon losing to BYU, is now ranked No. 4, and Miami has taken the No. 1 spot as the only team ranked ahead of the Cougars.
BYU will now look to defend its prime poll position by heading across the country to UCF this weekend, while Utah returns home for a ranked matchup with Houston.
