MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) – The director of the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC), John McMillan, will retire at the end of October, according to the Commission’s Chairman.
AMCC Board Chair Dr. Sam Blakemore confirmed McMillan will retire Oct. 29th, ending a 5-year tenure as the Commission’s first and only director that included a series of delays and controversies about the permitting process that included multiple lawsuits and resulted in a yearslong delay in rolling out medical cannabis products to patients in Alabama.

Blakemore said the AMCC Board will appoint a transition committee to begin a nationwide search for McMillan’s replacements, and said he believes the AMCC has some strong internal candidates.
“We need someone who understands the state of Alabama and how we’re trying to regulate medical cannabis in our state and what the voters want, which is for healthcare use,” Dr. Blakemore told WBRC.
