  • October 20, 2026

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The City of North Charleston has recovered several dead geese and ducks from Quaterman’s Pond.

Avian influenza, which is also known as bird flu, is suspected to be the cause.

Cases of bird flu can increase with seasonal bird migration underway. The virus can affect animals and, in some cases, humans. Owners of backyard poultry should be especially vigilant.

How to protect yourself from the virus

These are a few things people can do to protect themselves and their pets:

Avoid touching or handling dead or sick birdsKeep dogs and other pets away from deceased or visibly ill wildlifeDo not allow pets to eat dead birds or other wildlife

Owners should monitor flocks for signs of illness and follow guidance from state animal health officials. Anyone who encounters dead or sick birds at Quarterman’s Pond is asked to leave them undisturbed and to notify North Charleston Animal Control.

The City is continuing to monitor the situation and will share additional information as it becomes available.
