LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The La Crosse school board votes Monday night on whether to join a federal lawsuit against Meta, ByteDance, Snap Inc. and Google, alleging their platforms were designed to fuel addiction and harm student mental health.
The vote takes place at their regular Board of Education Meeting, which follows the board’s public budget meeting beginning at 6 p.m.
More than 1,200 school districts nationwide have joined the litigation, known as MDL 3047, seeking to recover money spent on student mental health services. Four Wisconsin districts — Kenosha Unified, Green Bay Area Public Schools, Racine Unified and Milwaukee Public Schools — are already participating.
If the board votes to join, La Crosse Public Schools would be represented on a contingency-fee basis — meaning no attorney fees or litigation expenses would be owed unless the district receives a recovery. If successful, attorneys would collect a third of any settlement or award.
