Najee Harris delivered a message Sunday after the Giants lost to the Saints.

And Monday, Giants head coach John Harbaugh sent a message of his own, releasing the veteran running back.

Harris was signed just before the season began after starting quarterback Jaxson Dart took a bad hit on a missed pass block from Tyrone Tracy Jr.

In the 34-27 loss to the Saints, Harris rushed four times for 2 yards and afterward complained about not getting enough carries to show what he can do.

“It’s hard to get into a rhythm with one or two plays,” Harris told reporters. “If you’re getting a play here and then get taken out for a series, there’s nothing you could do. I’ve never been through none of this before.”

Harris finished his undistinguished and short Giants career with 91 yards on 31 carries for a 3.2-yard average.

Harris was released just two days after Harbaugh benched Cam Skattebo, who lost a damaging fumble in overtime against the Commanders with the Giants well within field goal range to win the game.

Skattebo had been the team’s lead back but hadn’t been performing well and fumbled four times. The lost fumble against Washington was apparently the breaking point for Harbaugh.

Harris, who rushed for 4,312 yards and 28 touchdowns for the Steelers in his first four years in the NFL, was in line to be the lead back after Skattebo’s playing time was reduced. He started the New Orleans game.

With Harris released, the Giants are left with Skattebo, Tracy and Devin Singletary in their backfield.

Harbaugh, immediately after the New Orleans game and again Monday, expressed frustration over the lack of production from his running backs.

“Nobody has really taken the bull by the horns,” Harbaugh said after the loss to the Saints, when Harris, Tracy and Singletary accounted for 34 yards on 14 carries.

Skattebo played only six offensive snaps and didn’t get a carry.

Harbaugh said he’d “love” to be in a “circumstance” he was in as the Ravens coach when he had Derrick Henry or when the Giants had Saquon Barkley and there was a clear No. 1 back.

“That would be great [to have], and we haven’t [had it],” Harbaugh said. “Our run game hasn’t earned that yet, and none of those guys have. My advice would be to any player, and it’s all the guys, we had the same conversation. I’ve had the same conversation with all the running backs, the receivers, it’s no different than any position, but do the most you can with the opportunities you get.

“Make the most of those opportunities and you’re sure to get more opportunities. Do something.”

In the case of Harris, he didn’t, but he said something. And then Harbaugh did something, cutting Harris.

Tracy stood out from the rest of the group Sunday, totaling 45 total yards and two touchdowns on eight touches.

It would be a surprise not to see Skattebo get back into the mix this week with some touches against the Texans on Sunday in Houston.
