[This story contains spoilers for episode seven of Dancing With the Stars season 35.]

Dancing With the Stars celebrated its most emotional night in the ballroom: Dedication Night.

During the episode, the celebrities paid tribute to a person (or place) of their choosing, with a special guest in each number. It’s traditionally one of the most touching nights of each season, and this year is shaping up to encompass a plethora of moving tributes.

Celebrities still competing on season 35 include Tatyana Ali, Tyler Cameron, Jenna Dewan, Ezra Frech, Amber Glenn, Maura Higgins, Jackson Olson, Harry Shum Jr., Julia Stiles and Connor Wood.

Tatyana danced in honor of her Fresh Prince of Bel-Air co-star James Avery, and she was joined by co-host Alfonso Ribeiro in the tribute. Tyler dedicated his dance to mothers everywhere, while Jenna, Jackson and Ezra also honored their mothers in their respective dances. Connor similarly dedicated his piece to his father.

Amber paid tribute to her sister, while Harry danced for his wife. Maura was the only celebrity to choose a location for the center of her dance, and she paid tribute to Ireland. Another highly anticipated tribute was performed by Julia, who dedicated her dance to her 10 Things I Hate About You co-star Heath Ledger.

Former DWTS pro dancer Kym Johnson-Herjavec was also in the ballroom Tuesday night, serving as a guest judge.

Dedication Night kicked off with a strong start with Ezra and Daniella Karagach, who earned the first 10 paddle of the season. They scored a 37/40.

However, it didn’t take long for more 10s to be handed out, as Amber and Pasha Pashkov bested their mark, earning two perfect scores from the judges for a total of 38/40.

During Tuesday’s show, it was revealed that Tyler is expecting his first child, a baby girl, with his fiancée Tate Madden. Elsewhere in shocking reveals, Julia and Ezra Sosa were joined by the 10 Things I Hate About You cast to finish off her tribute to Ledger.

It was additionally announced that DWTS: The Next Pro judge Shirley Ballas will join as a guest judge for next week’s Horror Movie Night.

While Dedication Night promises to be emotional, much of the discourse leading up to Tuesday’s DWTS episode has centered on Val Chmerkovskiy’s one-week suspension following his reference to Will Smith’s infamous Oscars slap while critiquing Carrie Ann Inaba’s judging of his wife, Jenna Johnson.

“The well-being of everyone who works on Dancing With the Stars is non-negotiable. Val’s social media post was inappropriate and does not reflect the values or standards expected of anyone connected with the show. As a result, he will not participate in next week’s show,” BBC Studios, the production company behind Dancing With the Stars, said in a statement on Saturday while announcing Chmerkovskiy would not dance with Jenna for Dedication Night.

After Super Bowl Night, the professional dancer drew controversy for a reference he made to Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars while defending his wife, fellow pro Johnson, against comments Inaba made in the episode. In a TikTok Story posted on Wednesday, Chmerkovskiy wrote, “You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night.”

Inaba responded to Chmerkovskiy’s Fresh Prince remarks on Instagram Thursday, writing, “So this is what we are doing now?” while resharing a screenshot of a Page Six post featuring the dancer’s comment, alongside a split image of Smith and Chmerkovskiy.

He subsequently apologized to the longtime Dancing With the Stars judge in an Instagram statement on Thursday, and BBC Studios announced he work not partake in Tuesday’s episode on Saturday. Jenna will dance with formerly eliminated pro Alan Bersten; it’s unclear if Chmerkovskiy will return after Dedication Night, although BBC Studios’ statement hints that he will be back for next week’s Horror Movie-inspired episode.

The couple with the lowest combined total of judges’ scores and viewer votes is eliminated at the end of each DWTS episode. Each viewer is allowed up to 10 votes per couple, per voting method (via ABC’s website and by text).

Live voting takes place during the East Coast airing of each show and ends shortly after the final performance; that means if you’re a West Coast viewer and want to vote, you must do so between 5 p.m. PT and roughly 6:45 p.m. PT, as voting ends after the final performance.
