Do you think The RealReal can be unfairly made fun of? For example, once I sent in a wrap skirt to consign that got styled on the mannequin as a poncho. It sold quite quickly, though. Do you have a sense of humor about that stuff?
It’s definitely something we laugh at, and we’ll send things around when we see them. We alert the teams, but also laugh about them. I have someone who works on my team who uses them as screen savers. We work really hard to minimize the amount of error. But the thing is, our rate of mistakes is under 1%. We process 1 million individual SKUs per month. What really blew my mind when I started working there was just the sheer human scale of the thing.
I’ve been to the New Jersey warehouse, and it’s wild how big it is. Do you have favorite stories that people tell you?
I always love the stories when a friend walks into another friend’s party and the friend is wearing whatever shirt, and the other friend goes, “Did you buy that on The RealReal?” And the friend says, “Yeah.” And the other friend goes, “It’s mine.” The other thing that happens, and though I can’t name names, though I have some really funny ones, is the amount of times that, like, you really may be buying Kim Kardashian’s Birkin or whoever’s thing.
