White House marks 43 years since deadly Beirut Marine barracks bombing, links attack to Iran
The White House on Friday commemorated the 43rd anniversary of the 1983 Beirut Marine barracks bombing that killed 241 American service members, drawing a direct connection between the attack and President Donald Trump’s ongoing military campaign against Iran.
In a post on X, the White House honored the Americans killed in the Oct. 23, 1983, terrorist attack in Beirut, Lebanon, sharing a photograph of the destroyed barracks and a message remembering the victims.
The administration also accused Iran of directing and financing the attack, linking the bombing to its current confrontation with Tehran.
The bombing occurred when a suicide attacker drove a truck packed with explosives into a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers. The attack remains one of the deadliest single-day losses for the Marine Corps since World War II.
The anniversary comes as Trump continues his military and economic pressure campaign against Iran, with the president saying Friday that the U.S. could seize the country’s oil and asserting American control over the Strait of Hormuz.
