No ranked teams have played this week — yet — but there has already been some drama.

Last night, Duke, Army and Stanford all picked up dramatic, tight wins.

Duke wins on trick play

Blue Devils RB Nate Sheppard threw a 28-yard TD pass with a little more than 1 minute remaining to lift Duke (5-2 overall, 2-2 ACC) to a 19-16 win at Virginia.

Sheppard entered the game as the ACC’s top rusher, but the Virginia defense held him to only 55 yards on 15 carries. The Cavaliers (4-4, 2-3), however, couldn’t get the final stop as they lost for the third time in four games.

Army tops Tulsa on 50-yard FG

Dawson Jones’ 50-yard field goal on the last play of the game gave Army a 38-35 win at Tulsa.

The Black Knights (5-2 overall, 4-1 American) rushed for 275 yards and four touchdowns, led by Godspower Nwawuihe (135 yards, TD) and QB Cale Hellums’ 121 yards and three scores.

Jones had two long kicks on the day, as he kicked a career-long 51 yarder in the first quarter. He also converted on a 34-yard attempt before halftime.

Stanford’s Warren pilots Cardinal to win

Stanford QB Davis Warren had a big night, passing for 303 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinal beat NC State 31-28.

The Cardinal (4-4 overall, 2-3 ACC) won again at home, improving to 4-1 on The Farm — the only loss coming to now-No. 1 Miami. However, Stanford is 0-3 on the road, being outscored by more than 44 points per game. Three of the Cardinal’s next four games are on the road.
