This is shaping up to be one of the most chaotic college football seasons in the 21st century. We didn’t see five of the top seven teams in the country go down today, but it was still a bad day to be a ranked team.
No. 16 USC was a great example. Coming out of an open date, the Trojans were 6-1 with all their goals in front of them. Then they laid an egg against Wisconsin on offense in a 24-7 loss. The Trojans defense had one of its best performances of the season, allowing just 200 total yards, but the offense posted just 241 yards and seven points.
It was a long day for quarterback Jayden Maiava, who threw two interceptions and absorbed some big hits, and the temperature of Lincoln Riley’s seat is rising rapidly.
For the second week in a row, the No. 2 team in the country lost. Ironically enough, it just happened to be BYU, which defeated No. 2 Notre Dame last week. The Cougars came off that emotional win and struggled to defend UCF on a cross-country trip to Orlando. The Knights were able to pull out a wild win in double-overtime, 39-31.
Plunging the Big 12 further into disarray, No. 8 Texas Tech got beaten handily by unranked Cincinnati. In the SEC, No. 11 Tennessee choked away a late lead to South Carolina one week after bullying Alabama.
Now, there were some top-25 teams that handled business. No. 1 Miami obliterated Pittsburgh, No. 18 LSU rolled Auburn and No. 13 Alabama pulled away from Texas A&M late.
