Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including an 87th-minute winner, as Real Madrid claimed a huge 2-1 victory over their Clásico rivals Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Barça were hoping to become the first team to ever start a season in one of Europe’s top five leagues with 10 straight victories, having already built a six-point buffer to Madrid ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Hansi Flick’s hosts were up against it when Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance ricocheted in off Mbappé in the 41st minute, although Raphinha’s 13th league goal of the season drew them level shortly after the hour mark.

However, Mbappé was on hand to slot into an empty net following a lightning quick Madrid break late on, prompting wild celebrations from manager José Mourinho on the sidelines.

Madrid quickly got on the front foot as they looked to quiet a raucous Catalan crowd, but no white shirts were lurking for a tap-in when Joan García could only parry Arda Güler’s drive.

Raphinha had three efforts at the other end, the second of which was the most threatening as his first-time strike whistled over the crossbar following some industrious work from Pedri, while Andrii Lunin – standing in for the ill Thibaut Courtois – denied Anthony Gordon at his near post.

Yan Diomande was one of Madrid’s brightest sparks in attack, and their opening goal came from him being slipped into the area by Marc Cucurella. The Ivorian’s centre was far from his best, but Martín blasted it straight off Mbappé and into the net.

Barça should have had a quickfire equaliser when Lamine Yamal scuffed an uncharacteristically poor finish wide, but Flick’s team were cut open on two more occasions before the interval.

Mbappé rifled against the inside of the post, only for the offside flag to go up against him, but Diomande was onside when he broke in behind and hit the side netting moments later.

Madrid spurned another excellent counter-attacking chance early in the second half, with Jude Bellingham failing to get his pass off when Mbappé was supporting him against an isolated Martín.

And Barça made those reprieves count when Raphinha’s shot proved too hot for Lunin to handle, after the Brazilian was cleverly found by Pedri on the right side of the area.

Lunin made a terrific, one-handed save to keep out Martín’s header shortly afterwards, though he was lucky to see one Yamal effort drift narrowly wide and another smack Dean Huijsen in the face.

However, there was a cruel twist to come at the other end as, after some superb work from the outstanding Bellingham, substitute Eduardo Camavinga burst down the right flank and centred for Mbappé, who simply could not miss.

Mbappé Outdoes Yamal Ahead of Ballon d’Or

Just 24 hours before the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place in London, Sunday’s Clasico saw two of the main contenders for the prize – Yamal and Mbappé – go head-to-head.

And though the voting has long since been finalised, it was Mbappé who provided one final reminder of his credentials to be crowned the best player in the world.

There may have been a huge slice of fortune about Mbappé’s opener, but his brace took him to five goals in two visits to Barça as a Madrid player. That is the most by any Blancos player since the start of 2013-14, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema (four each).

Yamal, meanwhile, missed a glaring chance to equalise in the first half and was unable to hit the net with any of his five shots, which were worth a team-high 0.51 expected goals (xG). He also failed to create a single chance and only completed 76.6% of his passes (47/76)

And, on a night where Barça could have opened up a huge nine-point gap to Madrid and made La Liga history in the process, it was Mourinho who earned the bragging rights.

His unbeaten run in Clásico matches – which dates back to his previous spell in charge of Madrid – now stands at six games (W4 D2). He is just the third Blancos coach to enjoy such a run, after Miguel Muñoz (1962 to 1965) and Vicente del Bosque (2001 to 2003) both had seven-match streaks.
