ELK GROVE, Calif. —
Two students were taken to the hospital after being stabbed Wednesday at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, according to police.
The Elk Grove Police Department said two teenagers, 15 and 16 years old, were arrested and are both high school students. One of them is a student at Pleasant Grove High, while the other attended a different high school in Elk Grove, according to police.
Police said the stabbing was reported around 3:45 p.m. A school resource officer arrived to find school staff providing first aid to both victims, who were just outside a restroom near the gym. The officer joined in life-saving efforts until the students were taken to the hospital.
When other officers arrived to the scene, they found and detained the teenage suspects in a neighborhood just south of the school.
Police said a fight happened in a school restroom when one of the suspects pulled out a knife and stabbed both students.
One victim remains hospitalized and is recovering from their injuries, which are no longer life-threatening. The second victim also remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
Both suspects were booked into Juvenile Hall on attempted murder charges.
The high school and adjacent campus, Katherine Albiani Middle School, were put on precautionary lockdowns, which have since been lifted.
The Elk Grove Unified School District said students already had been released for the day when the stabbing happened. Pleasant Grove High School said all activities on both campuses were canceled Wednesday night.
School officials said there will be an increase in law enforcement on campus Thursday along with a district crisis team available to support students and staff “who may need to talk about what happened.”
