VOORHEES, N.J. — Amid all kinds of adversity in this 3-8-4 start to their season, the Flyers had two positive signs at practice Friday.

Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett both practiced, taking what appeared to be a significant step forward in their injury recoveries. Konecny has missed the last 10 games because of a lower-body injury. Tippett has missed the last six with an upper-body injury.

“They’re now day to day more than ever,” Rick Tocchet said. “It’s getting close. Hopefully get a couple of good days of practice. Whether they come to me or the doctors say they’re ready to go, that’s the next process.”

The Flyers practice again Saturday before hosting the Mammoth on Sunday (4 p.m. ET/NBCSP). Tocchet didn’t rule out Tippett or Konecny returning for the game, calling them “possibilities.”

If anyone is closer than the other to rejoining the lineup, it may be Tippett. Konecny was in a non-contact jersey Friday. However, he really pushed it and started to test things out with some contact later in practice.

“Originally you put them in non-contact, but then as the practice goes on, he feels like, ‘Hey, I need contact.’ You’ve got to have the player have a feel, too,” Tocchet said. … “He could have taken some contact, but I think as the practice went on, he was like, ‘Hey, I want more.’ He had a good practice, it was good.”

A little over three weeks ago, Konecny was in pain after taking a check to his right leg. The club has missed the alternate captain. He has been the Flyers’ leading point man in each of the last five seasons. The team has missed his emotional presence, as well.

“A huge spark for us in the locker room,” Noah Cates said. “He’s always talking and getting us going, not being too serious. That’s definitely a huge addition, him and Tip coming back here soon hopefully.”

Tippett led the Flyers with 28 goals last season. He put up a pair of hat tricks, three shorthanded goals and 51 points. The Flyers could absolutely use his ability to make plays up ice.

Tocchet’s club has lost three straight (0-2-1) and it has scored just 1.93 goals per game this season.

“I just see a younger squad — the injuries have hit — where we have not dealt with the expectations and adversity,” the Flyers’ head coach said. “We all know that. We have to deal with it better. That’s something we work on and talk about every day.”
