ATLANTA — Atlanta Dream fans watched an unforgettable season come to a heartbreaking end.

The Dream fell to Golden State Valkyries in Game 7 of the WNBA Finals, coming up just short of bringing a championship home to Atlanta.

But despite the loss, fans say this season gave them something to believe in.

Dream fans packed Jolene Jolene in Atlanta’s Kirkwood neighborhood, ready to celebrate and ready to witness history.

Inside, Atlanta Dream fans brought the energy of a sold-out arena, turning every basket into a reason to get on their feet.

“We got the players. We’re going to win,” Gertha Russell said while dancing to fans chanting.

But as the clock ticked down in Game 7, the cheers turned into nervous glances and the dancing into nail-biting. With Golden State pulling ahead in the fourth quarter, the tension was written all over fans’ faces.

“When we got that jump ball in the end, that was that point where we were saying we just need one more shot at it,” Jessica Williams said.

For some of these fans, their love for the Dream goes all the way back to 2008, when the franchise first came to Atlanta.

For others, this was the season that turned them into Dream fans.

“In all honesty, I just got into the WNBA, and it’s because of the Dream team. I don’t know how the history was, but I know now, they are really something,” said Joy Scrutchings.

While the Dream came up short of the ultimate prize, fans say there was something special about this team: new energy, a roster that gave them hope, and Angel Reese.

“This season is one for the books. It’s been incredible. We’re proud of them no matter what,” said Hannah Melhorn, a fan who traveled from Tennessee to be at the Atlanta watch party.

The final score may not have gone Atlanta’s way, but if Game 7 proved anything, it’s that this city isn’t done dreaming.

“I trust them next year,” Melhorn said. “There’s another one coming back here. Keep an eye on our dream.”
