Crowley, who is currently Milwaukee County’s top elected official, will keep the governor’s office under Democratic control. This is the first time the party has held the post for more than eight years in a row.
“I’m going to fight for you, every day. It’s my responsibility to offer my vision for where we are headed and to provide the leadership to bring us together to get it done. Lower costs for housing, utilities, and child care; real property tax relief, health care you can both access and afford, with real options, good schools, funded without a referendum every other year, a government that’s open, accountable, and transparent,” Crowley said in a statement.
Before becoming county executive, Crowley served in the Wisconsin State Assembly. As county executive, he has focused on county finances, housing, mental health services, public transit and racial equity, according to his county biography.
Crowley became his party’s nominee after a tumultuous primary. He initially dropped out of the race, then rejoined at Evers’ urging and defeated democratic socialist Francesca Hong to clinch the nomination.
Throughout his campaign, Crowley hammered opponent Tiffany’s close allegiance to Trump, including his attempts to overturn Trump’s 2020 loss in Wisconsin, and said Tiffany hasn’t done enough to lower prices for the middle class.
Crowley, 40, was elected as Milwaukee County executive in 2020 after serving just over three years in the state Assembly. Crowley ran in support of expanding Medicaid coverage and increasing funding for public school and child care. He supports overturning the 15-year-old state law known as Act 10, which effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most public workers.
During his victory speech, Crowley made sure to remind voters, “We will always bleed green and gold.”
Tiffany issued a statement saying in part, “While tonight was not the outcome we had hoped for, I am incredibly grateful to the Wisconsinites who supported our campaign. I congratulate David Crowley on his victory. We both care deeply about Wisconsin, and I wish him and his family the very best as he prepares to serve as our next governor,” said Tiffany.”
