LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – You known the chant that is scheduled at every Husker sporting event: Go Big Red.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln art museum took and created an exhibited curated by members of the university and citywide community.
At the Sheldon Museum of Art, they wanted to to the idea of “Go Big Red” and create an exhibit showcasing art that features red in it. But they didn’t curate it themselves, they invited staff, students and community members with connections to Nebraska to select one piece from the Museum Collection that had red featured in it.
“It was really an invitation to community members to be an important, integral part of creating this exhibition, working together, building a sense of community,” said Erin Hanas, Sheldon Museum of Art.
When a piece was selected, the museum asked the curator who picked it to write a short, personal response about why they chose what they did.
10/11’s Sports Director Kevin Sjuts was asked to participate and he chose a watermelon sculpture. In his response to why, he said it reminded him of his childhood.
“Each of us would grab a watermelon slice like it was a trophy. The anticipated watermelon feats were the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable day at the ballfield.”
“We really hope that people will come in, maybe they will see something new in a work of art and really understand that everyone can have a meaningful encounter with a work of art and get a sense of this really wonderful rich community,” Hanas said.
You’ll find pieces by Husker athletic members like Coach Matt Rhule and John Cook, as well as many other people. The exhibit is open now and runs all the way through Dec. 31.
