There was a strange and unusual occurrence on the ice in Australia’s AIHL on Sunday, involving a former Detroit Red Wings player. For the first time all season, forward David Booth was held off the scoresheet.

Booth’s Melbourne Ice lost 4-3 in overtime to the Canberra Brave in a showdown of the AIHL’s top two clubs. Melbourne tops the league with 62 points. The Ice show just two regulation-time losses in 26 games. Canberra is second in the standings with 48 points.

Playing his 12th game of the season, Booth was held pointless for the first time. He’s accounted for 25 goals and 25 assists in those 12 games.

In his previous game on August 3, Booth enjoyed a five-goal, three-assist outburst against the Brisbane Lightning. In his earlier game against them, he dished out a season-high five assists during a six-point performance. Booth produced 3-4-7 totals in a game against the Central Coast Rhinos.

Along with his five-goal game, his stats sheet shows a four-goal game and a pair of three-goal games. Booth has had three five-point games. His account displays multiple points in 10 of his 12 games.

Booth Honors Red Wings Leader

The 40-year-old left-winger is playing his first season Down Under. He spent 10 seasons in the NHL. Booth scored 31 goals for the Florida Panthers in 2008-09. He also had a pair of 20-goal seasons for Florida. Both also played for the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Born in Detroit, Booth played college hockey for the Michigan State Spartans. He signed with the Red Wings as a free agent on October 2, 2017, following two seasons playing in Russia’s KHL.

Former NHL player David Booth, current Edmonton Oiler Noah Philp and former KHL/AHL/OHL superstar Martin St. Pierre were headliners in a Canada-USA charity game in Australia yesterday.

Wearing No. 17 for Detroit during the 2017-18 season, Booth scored four goals in 28 games. He’s wearing No. 40 with Melbourne, in recognition of a Red Wings icon.

“I’m honoring my favorite player from the Wings,” Booth explained in an appearance on the Gouche and Rosey Show. “That’s Henrik Zetterberg. He was also super great to me, so I’m honoring Henrik with number 40.”
