The trio will remain inside for now, except during scheduled walks.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque BioPark is welcoming three new flamingo chicks to its American flamingo flock at the zoo.
In June, for the safety of the eggs, zoo staff removed the eggs from Flamingo Island to a behind-the-scenes incubator. The first chick hatched July 11. The second hatched July 30 and the third hatched Aug. 6.
“The chicks are doing great, and our staff is so dedicated,” said Karen Waterfall, BioPark curator of birds. “Our care team has been hand-raising the chicks and monitoring them closely to help them meet their developmental milestones.”
Waterfall is excited about the hatchlings because this is the first year “in a while” this many have been hatched.
If you visit the BioPark’s wattled crane habitat at around 11:15 a.m., you can see the chicks out for a walk. They estimate the oldest chick will be out on Flamingo Island permanently around mid-October. The younger ones will follow after that.
