Arkansas nonfarm employment rose almost 2% in July with Education and Health Services and the tourism sectors accounting for a majority of the job gains. The state’s jobless rate in July remained at 3.7%, up from 3.4% in July 2024.

Total nonfarm employment – not seasonally adjusted – was an estimated 1,374,100 in July, up 26,100 jobs, or 1.94%, compared with 1,348,000 in July 2024. The number of unemployed was 53,049, up 9.8% compared with July 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report posted Tuesday (Aug. 19).

The state’s civilian labor force was an estimated 1,424,739, up 0.94% compared with July 2024. The labor force participation rate was 58.4% in July, slightly higher than 58.3% in July 2024.

The biggest year-over-year sector gains with nonfarm employment were in Education and Health Services (12,000 more jobs), Leisure and Hospitality (6,000 more jobs), and Trade, Transportation and Utilities (4,600 more jobs).

Gains in Education and Health Services were primarily from the health care and social assistance subsector which had an estimated 203,200 jobs in July, up 9,500 jobs compared with 193,700 jobs in July 2024. July gains in the Leisure and Hospitality (tourism) sector were from food services, which had an estimated 109,400 jobs, up 5,600 jobs compared with 103,800 in July 2024.

NATIONAL NUMBERS
Unemployment rates were lower in July in 2 states, higher in 1 state, and stable in 47 states and the District of Columbia, according to the BLS report. Seventeen states and the District had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, 5 states had decreases, and 28 states had little change. The national unemployment rate of 4.2% changed little over the month and was the same as in July 2024.

South Dakota had the lowest jobless rate in July at 1.9%. The District of Columbia had the highest rate at 6%. The next highest rates were in California at 5.5%, and Nevada at 5.4%. In total, 21 states had unemployment rates lower than the U.S. rate of 4.2%, 4 states and the District had higher rates, and 25 states had rates not appreciably different from that of the nation.

Over the year, nonfarm payroll employment rose in 19 states and was essentially unchanged in 31 states and the District of Columbia. The largest job gains occurred in Texas (+232,500), New York (+153,400), and Florida (+134,100). The largest percentage increases occurred in South Carolina (+3.4%), New Mexico (+2.7%), and Hawaii (+2.1%).
