Detroit —The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, MOCAD, will close its main building next week until early 2026 for major renovations and a redesigned Woodward Avenue facade of the historic Midtown building.
While MOCAD’s main building on 4454 Woodward Ave. shuts down on Monday until early 2026, the museum will continue some programming in its Mike Kelley Homestead, the full-scale replica of the 1950s ranch-style homeland that the renowned artist Mike Kelley grew up in Westland.
MOCAD didn’t provide an opening date for the work to be completed other than early next year, according to a press statement. No one from the museum was available for comment Tuesday.
The 2,000-square-foot building is a former car dealership originally designed by Detroit industrial architect Albert Kahn.
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the museum. The renovations will “focus on critical infrastructure upgrades, including HVAC improvements, and will feature a redesigned Woodward Avenue facade with a new public window display,” according to the press statement.
“This renovation is an investment in the museum’s future—one that will allow us to better serve artists, audiences, and the city of Detroit. As we look ahead, it’s just as important to reflect on our past as it is toimagine what’s possible,” said MOCAD co-directors Jova Lynne and Marie Madison-Patton in the press statement.
