A man was struck by a truck and killed Thursday afternoon in Coraopolis, Allegheny County, police said.Sky 4 flew over the crash scene near the corner of 5th Avenue and Main Street.Coraopolis police Chief Jason Stewart said the incident happened around 3:25 p.m.A tractor-trailer was stopped at the red light on Fifth Avenue, Stewart said. He said when the light turned green, the driver began driving and did not see the man in front of the truck.The crash is being investigated by the South Hills Area Council of Governments accident reconstruction team. Stewart said the driver was being cooperative. “He was the nicest guy, great family. My brother went to school with him, his family, you couldn’t ask for a nicer family,” said Darlene Youngworth, who lives on 5th Avenue. Youngworth was one of many people Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 spoke with who knew the victim. Community members said his family is known to run a nearby funeral home. “He was out every day, I just seen him yesterday. Nice, friendly guy,” Youngworth said. “Asked him how he’s doing, you know, said hi to the dog because I’m a dog person. It’s so devastating.”People are heartbroken to lose another familiar face in Coraopolis. Earlier this month, police said 61-year-old Ulises “Monty” Montalvo was killed in a hit-and-run on 4th Avenue. A memorial now stands in his honor, just one block away from Thursday’s incident. “Monty, he was a very nice, polite man. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for anybody. He was well known around here. Well loved around here, and then that happened. It’s just nonsense,” said Coraopolis resident Patty Ray.Coraopolis Mayor Michael Dixon shared a statement on Facebook and said in part, “I have directed our police department to immediately review the circumstances surrounding these incidents. We are evaluating high-risk intersections, lighting conditions, speed enforcement, and pedestrian safety measures.”Neighbors are urging drivers to use caution. “People slow down. Pay attention, you know. School’s starting. Kids are running around out in the street,” Youngworth said. “We just had a little girl, I believe it is, that got hit by a car here on Main Street.”“What needs to change is the cops need to be sitting around watching them speed and get them,” Ray said. The Valley Ambulance Authority also responded to the scene. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual involved in this tragic incident,” said Brian D. Herskovitz, chief of EMS, Valley Ambulance Authority. “Our crews worked diligently alongside our public safety partners, and we recognize the difficult impact this has on the entire community.”Fifth Avenue was closed between Chess and Main streets while investigators were on the scene.
