Middle Tennessee great and former Coordinator of Player Development Reggie Upshaw has been named the Player Development and Video Coordinating Assistant for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, announced Sunday.

“I am beyond excited to start this new chapter in my young coaching career,” said Upshaw. “It’s always been a dream of mine to do what I love at the highest level and now I have that opportunity! Thanks to the entire Blue Raider community for welcoming me back for two more unforgettable years and allowing me to start my coaching career with all of you the same way I did my playing career. I am forever thankful. Go Blue!”

Upshaw joined the MTSU coaching staff prior to the start of the 2023-24 season as the Coordinator of Player Development. With the Blue Raiders, he was instrumental in the development of the players both on and off the court, helping guide numerous student-athletes to receive All-Conference recognition. He led* the players through individualized workouts, while also assisting in scouting and in-game coaching for the team.

“I am very excited for Reggie and this opportunity to join the Phoenix Suns,” said Blue Raider Head Coach Nick McDevitt. “He has grown tremendously over the past two seasons as a coach, and I know he will continue to develop as he takes his skills and knowledge to the NBA. Reggie had a memorable four-year playing career at Middle Tennessee but also left his mark here as a coach. We wish him well in his new challenge and we know Middle Tennessee will always be his home!”

Upshaw was a four-year letterwinner for the Blue Raiders, earning three conference titles and two NCAA Appearances from 2013-17 and helping guide the program to 99 wins in that time. Perhaps most notable of his playing career in Murfreesboro was his statement-making dunk over Michigan State in the 2016 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the photo of which can be seen on the walls of the Murphy Center.

The Chattanooga, Tenn. native finished his MTSU playing career having garnered two Second Team All-CUSA honors, 2016 CUSA Tournament MVP and two CUSA All-Tournament Team and NABC All-District Team nods. He ranks fifth all-time in points scored, field goals made and blocks, fourth in rebounds and steals, second in starts and minutes plated and tied for first in games played.
