The singles competition for the men and women at the 2025 US Open began Aug. 24 as the best players in the world converge on Flushing, New York, for the final grand slam of the season.

On the men’s side, it is once again expected to come down to No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner (11/10) and No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz (7/4), as they have faced off in the last two grand slam finals and split them, with Alcaraz winning the French Open and Sinner winning Wimbledon.

Sinner is the defending champion, as he defeated American Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the 2024 final, and has been dominant all season — with the exception of some finals against Alcaraz. Their most recent meeting was an Alcaraz win in a walkover in the Cincinnati Masters final, as Sinner withdrew while battling an illness.

There’s a sizable gap between those two and the next man on the odds sheet, Novak Djokovic at 14-1, and the expectation is a third straight grand slam final meeting between the Italian and Spaniard. While Djokovic battled through a toe blister to get past 19-year-old American Learner Tien in straight sets on Sunday night, Alcaraz will open play Monday and Sinner won’t compete until Tuesday.

Despite No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz (30-1) being a finalist a year ago, it’s No. 6 seed Ben Shelton (18-1) who is the top American on the odds sheet. Shelton picked up the first ATP 1000 win of his career recently at the National Bank Open, defeating Fritz in the semis en route to the title, and comes into the US Open with expectations of a run deep into the second week.

No. 13 Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, played the most eventful match of the first night, falling in five sets to unranked Benjamin Bonzi. Things turned chaotic in the third set when a photographer prematurely entered the playing surface with Bonzi serving for the match. Medvedev, predictably, did not react favorably and sent the crowd into a frenzy. Medvedev would rally to win the third and fourth sets before Bonzi eventually settled down and took the fifth, 6-4.

On the women’s side, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek (12/5) edged out defending US Open champ and No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka (31/10) as the pre-tournament favorite as the Polish star is coming off of one of the most dominant grand slam final performances in history at Wimbledon. The six-time grand slam winner won the US Open back in 2022, and comes in fresh off a win at the Cincinnati Masters. Sabalenka has dominated hard-court majors recently, with two Australian Open wins and last year’s US Open title to push her into the No. 1 spot in the world rankings.

No. 3 seed Coco Gauff (7-1) is the leading American woman in the field, as she looks to capture her second US Open title after winning in 2023. No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 6 seed Madison Keys, No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova and No. 10 seed Emma Navarro all represent the other top American hopes, as US women make up half of the top 10 in the draw.

The first task for all of those top seeds is getting through their opening round matches successfully with a win. We’ll find out which seeds can avoid an early upset and who will be sent packing early on Sunday and Monday, as the US Open gets underway as the last chance to capture a grand slam title in 2025.
