The Indiana Fever just can’t seem to catch a break. Their struggles this season continue to mount, and on August 24, the team suffered its 18th loss of the year in a tough (84-97) defeat against the Minnesota Lynx.

Despite a strong effort from Kelsey Mitchell, who poured in 26 points, the night will be remembered less for the final score and more for a frightening moment involving guard Lexie Hull.

In the fourth quarter, Fever fans watched in shock as Hull was struck in the face by an elbow from Lynx veteran Kayla McBride. Hull immediately dropped to the floor and clutched her face in pain.

The incident quickly spread across social media and sparked outrage among Fever supporters.

Fans Are Not Happy With the Punishment That Kayla McBride Got

After the collision, officials wasted no time in calling a foul on McBride. Following a review, the foul was upgraded to a technical, but Fever fans weren’t satisfied. Many took to social platforms to blast the officiating. “The refs for the WNBA is awful they need to be re trained,” said one fan while another wrote, “WNBA is a joke. I wish it wasn’t but it is.”

Remember the dramatic June 17 matchup between the Fever and Connecticut Sun?  In that game, Jacy Sheldon struck Clark in the eye, only to later be knocked down hard by Marina Mabrey. In the final moments, Sophie Cunningham appeared to take matters into her own hands by pulling Sheldon’s hair and dragging her to the floor, which many saw as a fiery response to the earlier hits on Clark.

Without Cunningham on the floor, Fever fans feel their team has lost an edge, as no one could stand up for teammates when things turn physical. “I miss Sophie. We don’t have an enforcer anymore,” said one user.

Another moment fans couldn’t ignore came from star forward Aliyah Boston. Her shocked reaction to Hull’s fall went viral almost instantly. One fan shared the image, pointing out how Boston’s expression underscored just how dangerous the play looked in real time.

While most fans were busy criticizing the referees and questioning the league’s officiating standards, one supporter took a different approach. Instead of joining the outrage, they simply asked whether Hull was okay after the scary incident.

“Hope Lexie is ok, even the landing didn’t look good,” said the user.

While Hull’s toughness will likely keep her moving forward, the outrage from the Fever supporters highlights a growing call for stricter officiating and accountability in the league.
