It’ll be interesting once we find out which players the San Francisco 49ers claimed. It won’t be surprising to see the team active, especially in the wide receiver market. After all, outside of Ricky Pearsall and the recently acquired Skyy Moore, there aren’t many, if any, healthy wideouts on the roster.

So what will Wednesday bring? Per Aaron Wilson, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling will decide between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Niners. Valdes-Scantling only caught two passes in six games with the Buffalo Bills last year. The 30-year-old has extensive experience, but his most recent productive season in the NFL was 2022.

The 49ers aren’t in a position to be picky at wide receiver.

Wide receiver isn’t the only position the 49ers could use the help. They could be tempted to add a healthy RB3 or, if a defensive back they feel is an upgrade over Siran Neal, that would also be an option.

We’ll update this post with any rumors that happen throughout the day.

Kyle’s update, 9:04 a.m. PT: The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reports that edge rusher Trevis Gipson intends to join the 49ers practice squad.

That didn’t take long, per his agency, the 49ers signed Valdes-Scantling. Valdes-Scantling was with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason before Seattle released him. He caught three passes for 33 yards in their preseason finale.

Kyle’s update, 9:20 a.m. PT: Kendrick Bourne requested his release. The Patriots have a new coaching staff, drafted a wide receiver, and signed two other wideouts this offseason. Bourne likely saw the writing on the wall, and that’s why he asked for his release. Matt Maiocco said the 49ers have “high interest” in Bourne. How could they not?

Albert Breer said the Niners tried to include Bourne in any Brandon Aiyuk deals last summer. Given the current state of the wide receiver room, a Bourne reunion feels inevitable.

The Patriots used Bourne more as an outside receiver than a slot. That wasn’t the case when he was with the 49ers. Ricky Pearsall is the only true outside receiver that’s healthy, but it’s a problem the 49ers can figure out on the fly. They can get by with Bourne and Jennings for a couple of games until Demarcus Robinson returns. Bourne is a massive upgrade from the other wideouts on the roster.

Bourne is a vested veteran, so he’s free to sign to any team.

Kyle’s update, 9:38 a.m. PT: Seventh-rounder Junior Bergen is signing with the practice squad once he clears waivers, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Bergen was the only draft pick from the 2025 class that the Niners waived.

Kyle’s update, 9:59 a.m. PT: The 49ers claimed defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jefferson was a fourth-round pick out of LSU in the 2024 NFL Draft. Jefferson is more of a nose tackle at 6’4”, 317 pounds. Jefferson had four run stops in 32 snaps this preseason. He played 151 snaps for Jacksonville last year. It’s worth noting that all of those came after Week 6. The most snaps Jefferson played in a game were 35.

Matt Maiocco reports that Sebastian Valdez is signing to the practice squad.

None of the players the 49ers released were claimed.

Kyle’s update, 10:24 a.m. PT: Jeff Wilson is signing with the Miami Dolphins practice squad, per Adam Schefter.

Per Matt Barrows, the 49ers are bringing back rookie safety Derrick Canteen to the practice squad.

Kyle’s update, 11:17 a.m. PT: The Patriots waived wide receiver Javon Baker, who the team drafted in the fourth round in 2024. Baker did a whole lot of nothing as a rookie. He had one reception for 12 yards and three kick returns. That’s it.

Baker tested like a subpar athlete. His 10-yard split and 40-yard dash were in the 34th and 35th percentiles. In college, Baker relied on acrobatic contested catches and timing routes for his production. He’s a receiver the 49ers should be interested in.

Per Vic Tafur, the 49ers are signing former Raiders running back Sincere McCormick to their practice squad. McCormick had 39 carries for 183 yards last season with the Raiders. He also caught six passes for 29 yards.

McCormick tore his ACL and LCL in 2022. When he returned last year, an ankle injury ended his 2024 season.

The 49ers got a long look at McCormick during their joint practices earlier this month. He must’ve impressed the coaching staff that day.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt signed with the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.

Kyle’s update, 2:20 p.m. PT: John Lynch says former Jets quarterback Adrian Martinez is en route to the Bay Area and will be the 49ers’ practice squad quarterback. Martinez is mobile and can mimic Sam Darnold, Spencer Rattler, and Kyler Murray — the three quarterbacks the defense will see to begin the season.
