HOUSTON — College football is big business for universities across the country, particularly those in the Power 4 conferences.

College football generates millions of dollars for Texas universities each fall, with some schools earning upward of $100 million on the sport alone. Football is often the sport that drives the most revenue for universities — and it’s not even close. Additionally, revenues far outweigh expenses, making football the most profitable sport for many colleges.

Since the late 1800s and early 1900s, football has dominated the college athletics landscape, said Steven Rackley, professor in practice at Rice University’s Department of Sport Management. It has been a driving force for collegiate athletics as a whole, leading to the creation of the NCAA; conference realignment; name, image and likeness benefits; and now, revenue sharing

“College football was then and has always been the economic engine for college athletics,” Rackely said.
