Disney has shelved its highly anticipated live-action remake of “The Aristocats.”
The Roots drummer and frontman Ahmir Khalib Thompson, better known as Questlove, was set to direct the film based on the 1970 Disney classic. However, on the August 20 episode of “Score: the Podcast,” he gave fans an update, revealing the remake is no longer happening.
The director and musician explained that the project was shelved due to multiple leadership changes at Disney. “A new administration came in, and then I was like, ‘Okay, well, this is what I plan to do…,’” Questlove recounted to hosts Robert Kraft and Kenny Holmes. He tried to get the project off the ground, but the administration shuffled twice more.
“By the third time I was just like, ‘Maybe this isn’t meant for me,’” he said. “Because there’s also, at least, like right now, there’s so much options I have in pickings.”
The Academy Award winner added that while he “would have loved to have done that project,” he has a full roster of other films to work on. “I’ll be working till, you know, 2029, 2030,” he said.
The original “The Aristocats” film, which was voiced by Phil Harris, Eva Gabor, Sterling Holloway, and others, follows a family of Parisian cats set to inherit a fortune from their owner. But when their owner’s jealous butler kidnaps and abandons them in the countryside, they must team up with a smooth-talking tomcat to get back home before it’s too late.
In the last decade, Disney has embarked on a spree of creating live-action remakes of its most iconic animated films. “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Cinderella,” “Dumbo,” “The Jungle Book,” “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Mulan” have all received live-action adaptations.
