Many were unable to log into VNeID Thursday evening after the government announced a VND100,000 (US$3.9) gift for every citizen through the digital ID app to mark National Day.

From 9 p.m. users reported seeing an error message saying “System under maintenance. Please try again later” when clicking on the app.

Some said after logging in with their password or face, it simply froze.

“My family has five members, and we tried to log into our accounts on five devices, but none of them worked,” Minh Hai of Dai Mo Ward in Hanoi said.

On Friday morning users could log into the app again, but when entering the passcode under the Social Security section, a message saying “failed to connect to system” appeared.

The last time VNeID experienced large-scale login failures was on June 30, when many people tried to check updates on hometown registration following the reorganization of provinces and cities.

On Thursday Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued a directive stating that the Politburo had approved a gift of VND100,000 in cash to all Vietnamese citizens to mark the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, Sept. 2.

The Ministry of Finance and other relevant agencies have been tasked with arranging funding to distribute the money before Aug. 29.

Citizens are required to have a VNeID level-2 account and a bank account linked with the Social Security benefits section on the app to receive it.
