Alex Ovechkin was, to borrow a phrase from Joe Beninati, “simply sensational” in his appearance in Pavel Datsyuk’s farewell “Magic Game” on Saturday.

Taking the ice with some of the biggest names in Russian hockey, Ovechkin netted a hat trick in the exhibition held at Yekaterinburg’s UMMC Arena — home of the KHL’s HC Avtomobilist.

Ovechkin collected points on four of Team Red’s first seven goals of the game. He first earned an assist on an Ilya Kovlachuk goal early to give Team Red its first strike of the game.

The NHL’s greatest goal-scorer then went to work himself, scoring three different times.

Ovi’s first tally came as he flew down the left wing with a huge head of steam. He finished his power move to the net with a hard shot to the top of the net to give Team Red its first lead of the game, 3-2.

His second goal was one for the highlight reels. After gathering in a stretch pass from Datsyuk in stride, Ovechkin put the puck between his legs and shot, beating goaltender Vasily Koshechkin easily. Ovi could be seen flashing a wry smile after his trick shot.

Shortly after, Ovechkin completed his hat trick after an unbelievable passing play between himself, Datsyuk, and Kovalchuk — three of the greatest Russian hockey players of all-time. The Magic Man sent a no-look pass to Ovechkin wide open in the slot. Instead of shooting, Ovi dished to Kovalchuk. The former Caps forward then proceeded to give the puck back to The Great 8 for a layup.

Ovechkin’s Team Red won the friendly, 13-8, as his squad also got goals from his former Capitals line-mates Alex Semin and Sergei Fedorov.

Ovechkin shared his appreciation for Datsyuk and the incredible career he’s had after the final horn sounded.

“Of course, it’s sad,” Ovechkin replied when asked what it was like to help send Datsyuk off, per Match TV and a translation by Google Translate. “Because we played together for the national team and for Dynamo. Datsyuk was such a mentor, a role model. His work on and off the ice, his human qualities will be remembered for a lifetime.

Like other players on his team, Ovechkin shared a hug with Datsyuk after the game ended.

“It’s a pity that such hockey players and people end their careers,” Ovechkin added. “But today was a wonderful holiday. A very beautiful show that he put on for the fans. Everyone will remember this ‘The Magic Game’ for a long time. Especially since Pavel held it at his home, in Yekaterinburg. The local fans saw Kovalchuk, Kaprizov, Semin, Fedorov, Fetisov, that’s worth a lot. So thank you very much. It was a pleasure to play in this match. On the other hand, it was sad.”
