Emiliano Martinez has been left out of the Aston Villa squad to face Crystal Palace tonight, amid rumours regarding a potential transfer to Manchester United. The 32-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford before Monday’s 7pm deadline, as the Reds search for a new goalkeeper.
It emerged on Saturday that United were considering a late swoop for Martinez after Altay Bayindir made another mistake during their 3-2 win against Burnley. The Argentina international, who has received multiple offers, is reported to be waiting on a move to the Reds.
Martinez is said to have agreed personal terms on a switch to United and he is keen to push through a deal before the end of the transfer window. The Reds are thought to be in active talks with Villa for Martinez.
With the former Arsenal ‘keeper wanting to leave Villa Park and join the Reds, Unai Emery has now made the decision to leave Martinez out the squad to take on Palace in the 7pm Sunday kick-off.
Despite starting last weekend’s defeat at Brentford, Martinez won’t feature against Palace with Marco Bizot selected as the Villa goalkeeper. Bizot signed from Ligue 1 club Brest on a free transfer in the summer and kept a clean sheet against Newcastle United earlier this month, when Martinez was suspended.
While United are in negotiations with Villa for Martinez, the Reds are also making progress on a deal for Senne Lammens. The 23-year-old has been left out of successive Royal Antwerp squads and discussions with United continue. Lammens has not agreed personal terms, but it’s hoped a breakthrough can be reached.
Amorim has watched Bayindir make mistakes against Arsenal and Burnley in the Premier League. Andre Onana was recalled against Grimsby and made an error for their second goal.
Speaking after the 3-2 win against Burnley, Amorim defended his ‘keepers, insisting it’s hard to be a goalkeeper in this current United side. “Guys, they are humans,” said Amorim.
“Manchester United, everything is in use. Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. And you can see, I can change the goalkeeper in the situations that happen.
“We are in that moment. I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment. But if you look at the first goal, we can defend it better. We suffered a quite similar goal against Fulham, because we don’t do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side.
“All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper. So, the players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. So it’s not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve.”
