Niskayuna, NY (WRGB) — Niskayuna schools are considering a new policy that would restrict the use of internet-enabled devices in classrooms. Under the proposed rules, students would still be allowed to use cell phones that cannot connect to the internet, such as old-school flip phones. However, devices like smartphones, tablets, and Bluetooth earphones must be kept out of the classroom and stored in lockers, pouches, or secure containers.
While the school cannot require staff to keep their phones away, school leaders are encouraging teachers to serve as role models by limiting their own device use.
According to the draft policy, parents who need to contact their children are encouraged to call or email the main office. Alternatively, they can drop off written notes, which staff would deliver by hand.
