‘Roxy,’ beloved Dauphin Island fox, likely to be removed to protect sea turtles and birds

A red fox named “Roxy”— and her pups— that has become popular with Dauphin Island residents is likely to be removed from the island, causing fury on social media Wednesday.

“Get this… it was decided in the name of conservation in order to save millions in grant money Dauphin Island receives to protect animals. It doesn’t make any sense!” said Beth Cowan Drake on Facebook. Drake runs the group “Alabama the Beautiful.”

But state and town officials say the move is needed to protect the hundreds of migratory bird species that stop on Dauphin Island every year.

“We’re trying to create this area that can help these struggling birds and turtles,” said Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier.

Tuesday night, the Dauphin Island Town Council voted to move forward with a contract with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to address invasive species on the far west end of Dauphin Island. APHIS, as it’s known, is a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The town of Dauphin Island’s contract with APHIS will be paid for using Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill funds.

Foxes are not the only animals of concern, Collier said: the agency will also work to manage raccoons, possums and other predators.

The west end of Dauphin Island has been designated as a preserve for migratory birds and sea turtle nests. It was purchased in 2021 using funds from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill settlement.

The island town of less than 2,000 people now manages the preserve, carrying out the conservation and management plan created to protect the species that use the preserve.

Red foxes have become a particular problem on the west end of Dauphin Island, said Amy Hunter, science coordinator with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. They are overpopulated and pose a nuisance, she said.

All six sea turtle species that reside in the U.S. are considered endangered, and loss of nesting habitat is considered one of the primary threats to the species. Rare snowy plovers live in the preserve and are vulnerable to predators: their nests are little scrapes in the open sand.

Foxes are smart, Hunter said, and they know to target nests with lots of eggs. There were more than 60 “false crawls” on Dauphin Island during nesting season this year, Hunter said. A “false crawl” occurs when a female sea turtle comes ashore to lay eggs but is disturbed and does not nest.

More than half of those “false crawls” showed signs of fox harassment, Hunter said: fox paw prints near the turtle’s drag marks, for example.

Still, residents don’t want red foxes, like Roxy, to be targeted. Spence Harrison, a wildlife photographer who lives on Dauphin Island, previously told AL.com he believes relocating the foxes is overkill.

Roxy is docile, Harrison said, and is fed by humans. Harrison started a petition in 2023 to “protect Roxy” from “eradication” that was signed by more than 4,000 people.

“Roxy is more than just another animal; she symbolizes the rich biodiversity of our island,” Harrison said in the petition. “The proposed plan threatens not only Roxy’s existence but also disrupts the balance of our local ecosystem.”

Harrison did not respond to a request for comment from AL.com.

Collier said officials have tried other methods to combat predators on the west end of Dauphin Island. In a method called “taste aversion,” wildlife officials planted fake eggs that cause irritation to predators. Officials also placed fences around nesting areas.

But none of these methods have been effective at deterring predators, like the foxes.

“I understand they can be cute, and people feed them, but we have an obligation to do this,” Collier said.

He noted that there are foxes elsewhere on Dauphin Island, though there weren’t when he was growing up.

It’s not clear what will happen to the foxes once they are captured. Collier said the town has to trust that APHIS will do what they believe is best with the foxes.

A representative from APHIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hunter said she believes the captured foxes will be “humanely euthanized.” There’s not really a feasible way to relocate the foxes, she said.

A change.org petition started Wednesday said Collier authorized an “extermination” of the foxes.

But Hunter said this is inaccurate. Not all of the foxes will be captured, the population will be reduced to relieve pressure on the migratory birds and sea turtles.

“They absolutely are a nuisance predator,” Hunter said. “They’ve lost all fear of humans from people feeding them over the years.”
