Virginia City is set to host its 66th Annual International Camel and Ostrich Races from Friday, September 5, through Sunday, September 7, at the Virginia City Fairgrounds. This lively tradition, which began as a prank between Virginia City’s Territorial Enterprise and the San Francisco Chronicle, has grown into a must-see event attracting visitors from far and wide.

“This event has taken on a life of its own over the past 66 years,” said Todd Tuttle, tourism director in Virginia City. “We invite everyone to come experience the races for themselves and make a weekend of it in Virginia City.”

The weekend promises four race shows featuring camels, ostriches, zebras, and emus, with each race offering its own mix of humor and unpredictability. The schedule kicks off with “Hot Camel Nights” on Friday at 5 p.m., offering a locals discount. Saturday features two shows at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with a special “Camel Hump on C Street” event at 12:30 p.m. Sunday is Family Day, with free camel rides for the first 100 kids at noon.

In addition to the races, visitors can enjoy carnival-style food from local trucks, browse artist and craft vendors, and cool off with beverages from event bars. Multiple seating options are available, including open-air bleachers, shaded premium seating, and an enclosed VIP Tent with tables and a private bar. Children age 2 and under are free when seated on an adult’s lap.

Parking is available at the fairgrounds and in town, with complimentary golf cart service for the elderly, disabled, and those with limited mobility. Free shuttles will run on Saturday and Sunday to transport guests between C Street and the fairgrounds.

Visitors are encouraged to explore Virginia City before and after the races, enjoying local restaurants, unique shops, historic saloons, mine tours, ghost tours, and museums. For more information, visit visitvirginiacitynv.com or contact the Virginia City Tourism Commission at 775-847-7500.
