St. Petersburg, Fla. — On this day in 1957, long before #vanlife and Instagrammable road trips, Jack Kerouac’s great American novel On the Road was published, capturing the restless spirit of postwar America and inspiring generations to chase open highways and endless horizons.

Kerouac eventually had to give up chasing stories across the U.S., and he settled down in St. Petersburg, FL where his final home is an Airbnb (of sorts) and where visitors can actually sit at his desk while contemplating their own next adventure.

Overnight stays are available at the house, located at 5169 10th Ave. N, on a case by case basis, and private guided tours are available for between one and 30 people, for a tax-deductible donation.

For fans of Kerouac and the Beat Generation, this quiet corner of St. Petersburg is a must-visit, offering a tangible connection to the man who once made America’s highways feel infinite.
