AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Big news in Amherst County: Amazon is building a “last mile” distribution facility.

It’s a project that has been in the works since December 2024.

Amherst County finalized the deal with Amazon in August.

The company will construct a 78,000 square foot “last-mile” distribution center on 26 acres of land in the Amelon Commerce Center.

The facility will be the last stop before your package arrives at your door.

Victoria Hanson, executive director of the Amherst County Economic Development Authority, said it’s a major win for the area.

“It shows how strong our economy is, it shows how good our infrastructure, our roads, our logistics are, which is fantastic to have an internationally known household name that lands right here in Amherst County,” Hanson said.

The facility will bring dozens of jobs.

“It’s also a new tax investment, more than 16 million dollars that will go on our tax rolls and that also helps support Amherst County emergency services, our law enforcement, our schools, our government, so it’s really great to have that new investment and the jobs that will come with it,” Hanson said.

Hanson said the project is a result of lots of time and money spent to ready the property for a heavy hitter like Amazon.

“We put all of our dollars together, leveraged them as much as we could and got this site ready, so it goes to show all that investment now has this return on investment that’s going to give back to the county, going to help our economy, and I think puts it on the map; we’ve got Amazon,” Hanson said.

CEO of the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance, Megan Lucas, said Amherst’s deal with Amazon is a credit to the county’s efforts and planning.

“But for them having the vision to invest in a 200,000 square foot pad-ready site, this announcement that Victoria had yesterday would not have happened. So it is a big deal; anytime a company chooses to grow and expand in this region, it is a success,” Lucas said.

ABC 13 reached out to Amazon for comment, but they were unavailable.

They said the project is in the early stages and they will share more details as it progresses.
