Pierre McGuire is going to be back behind a microphone this season.
The long-time NBC Sports analyst has a new job with the Pittsburgh Penguins, joining Paul Steigerwald and Brian Metzer for pregame and postgame coverage on the team’s radio network. McGuire has been doing appearances for CBS Sports HQ over the offseason as he works his way back into the hockey media landscape.

The New Jersey native is well known for his polarizing commentary, typically waxing poetic about parts of the game that some find inane or mundane. He is also famous for his nuanced quips and deep pulls on players from when they were prospects just getting into the professional game.
McGuire has a history with the Penguins organization, previously serving as a scout and assistant coach for the club for two seasons (1990-1992), winning two Stanley Cups (1991, 1992). He was also a candidate for the Penguins’ general manager job in 2014 before it ultimately went to Jim Rutherford.
After nearly two decades split between TSN and NBC Sports on TV, McGuire was hired in July 2021 as the Ottawa Senators’ senior vice-president of player development. He did not last a full year in his new position, being let go by the organization just 10 months later.
In his hockey career, McGuire has also previously served as an assistant coach for the Senators (1995-96) and Hartford Whalers (1992-93). While with the Whalers, he was eventually promoted to assistant general manager and then head coach.
During his six months as the Whalers’ head coach, McGuire coached the team to a 23–37–7 record. His only other head-coaching position came in the ECHL with the Baton Rouge Kingfish during the 1996-97 season.
Most importantly, McGuire once accidentally showed up at an RMNB Party where he graciously took photos with fans and helped lead a “Let’s Go Caps” chant with hundreds of people.
