CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Residents in Cedar Rapids have been reporting more bobcat sightings recently.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) attributes this rise to a decrease in trapping and other conservation efforts. Experts note that bobcats are particularly drawn to towns along rivers, where they find suitable hunting habitats.

The DNR reported that bobcats were nearly extinct in Iowa for many years. However, there was a larger population in Missouri. Thanks to conservation efforts in Iowa, the animals are making their way north once again.

The DNR advises people to appreciate bobcats from a distance and to keep pets closely monitored outdoors. They also encourage residents to report any bobcat sightings.
