Amanda Seyfried has clarified previous comments she made on the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot in the neck while speaking at a University in Utah.
Kirk was shot from afar at an event at Utah Valley University on September 10th. After a long manhunt, a 22-year-old Utah native named Tyler Robinson was arrested and charged with suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm, and obstruction of justice. He leaves behind a wife and two kids.
In the immediate aftermath of his death, Seyfried deemed the Turning Point founder “hateful” in a comment on Instagram. Now, she has taken to Instagram to publicly clarify her remark, which received strong backlash from other users on the social media platform.
The actor posted a statement along with the caption: “I don’t want to add fuel to a fire. I just want to be able to give clarity to something so irresponsibly (but understandably) taken out of context. Spirited discourse – isn’t that what we should be having?”
The statement itself began, “We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity.” The Oscar nominee continued, “I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable. No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”
Other stars have weighed in on the discourse. Hollywood veteran Arnold Schwarzenegger expressed that he was “very, very upset that someone’s life was taken because they have a different opinion. It’s just unbelievable.”
Jamie Lee Curtis also expressed remorse over his passing, moved to tears while speaking on a podcast. She shared, “I disagreed with him on almost every point I ever heard him say, but I believe he was a man of faith, and I hope in that moment when he died, that he felt connected with his faith.”
