Baby rhino born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, waiting to be named

  • September 22, 2025

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A critically endangered Eastern black rhino calf was just born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The male calf was born on Sept. 13 to 22-year-old mother Kibibbi and 25-year-old father Forest.

Zoo officials said the baby rhino is currently bonding with mom and not currently on public view.

He also does not have a name yet, but zoo officials said there will be an opportunity soon for guests to help name him.

Fewer than 583 Eastern black rhinos remain in the wild.

“Every birth is significant and is an opportunity to bring awareness to the conservation issues faced by this species,” said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director Dr. Chris Kuhar. “It’s especially meaningful to share this calf’s arrival on World Rhino Day, a time when we celebrate rhinos worldwide and highlight the urgent need to protect them.”
