LSU coach Kim Mulkey outlined her plans for transfer guard MiLaysia Fulwiley during her first news conference discussing the 2025-26 roster composition.

What Role Has Kim Mulkey Planned for MiLaysia Fulwiley at LSU?

In a press conference on Tuesday, Mulkey revealed her intentions to develop Fulwiley as a point guard. The Hall of Fame coach acknowledged Fulwiley’s previous impact against the Tigers.

“Well, Lay, we call her Lay. Lay is, she’s beaten me too many times for me not to have taken her into this program. I mean, she’s just a big shot, big steal, spectacular move. I’m going to challenge her to learn the point guard position, but I’m not going to take away her ability to play the off guard either.”

Mulkey explained the complexity of the point guard position and its demands on players.

“Well, you’re an extension of the coach on the floor, and so much is asked of you. And it’s not just what you’re capable of doing. You’ve got to know everybody else. You’ve got to know the offences. You’ve got to know what defences. I’m calling it the foul line, at the free throw line. You’ve got to basically be the coach on the floor.”

The former South Carolina star averaged 11.8 points per game last season while earning SEC Sixth Woman of the Year honors. Fulwiley was also named to the All-SEC second team and was a Dawn Staley Award finalist.

How Will Jada Richard and Divine Bourrage Impact Fulwiley’s Position?

Mulkey specifically mentioned that Fulwiley’s point guard development will depend on two teammates.

“A lot of that will depend on Jada’s development, a lot of that will depend on Divine’s development. Those guys all handle the ball for us.”

The praised Richard as the most experienced point guard option while highlighting her versatility. “When you think about our point guard play, Jada Richard may be the one who’s most polished on learning that position through her career. I just think Richard can shoot the perimeter shot. If I need her to go play the off guard and hit a big shot for her, she can.”

Richard led Louisiana Christian Academy to four state championships and finished her prep career with 2,896 points. She was named the 2023 Gatorade Louisiana Player of the Year and served as her class valedictorian.

Mulkey acknowledged that Bourrage will face typical freshman challenges. “Devine will be a freshman, and she’ll go through those freshman frustrations,” she said. The 5-foot-11 combo guard from Iowa averaged 19.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists as a junior.

Bourrage earned Iowa’s Gatorade Player of the Year honors and committed to LSU in September 2024. “So that’s a lot of talent out there on the perimeter,” Mulkey noted about her guard depth.

Mulkey’s backcourt plans reflect LSU’s deep talent pool, with multiple players capable of playing different positions. The coach expressed confidence in the versatility of her guard rotation, noting that “ballers want to play with ballers” when discussing how Fulwiley fits into the program’s culture.
