While players and coaches draw the ire of fans when they make mistakes, they aren’t the only ones held to a high standard during the football season. With how much money broadcasters make today, NFL fans and viewers expect play-by-play announcers and color commentators to bring their A-game every broadcast.
That wasn’t the case for Amazon Prime’s Kirk Herbstreit, who made several errors during a fourth-quarter drive in the Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks Thursday Night Football game in Week 4.
Kirk Herbstreit Fumbles Over His Words on Thursday Night Football in Week 4
During the Arizona Cardinals’ first drive of the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football in Week 4, Herbstreit, Amazon Prime’s color commentator, made quite a few errors while arguing with play-by-play announcer Al Michaels.
Herbstreit claimed Murray was in the same draft class as Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson on two separate occasions. That would be impossible, as Murray and Mayfield were selected first overall, Murray in 2019 and Mayfield in 2018. Michaels would eventually correct him.
His woes would not improve on that drive, as he mistakenly referred to Kyler Murray as former Georgia Bulldog QB Aaron Murray and then botched the outro to the commercial break.
did Kirk Herbstreit just stutter over all three names involved in that TD lol

While it is impressive that Herbstreit can commentate for both college and the NFL, his long-time experience in college football was on display with one fan saying, “Did Kirk Herbstreit just call Kyler Aaron Murray? Get this guy back to college football Saturday nights lol.”

Another fan expressed the same sentiment, explaining, “Kirk Herbstreit just mistaking Kyler Murray for Aaron Murray, shows he just can’t translate to the NFL and is a college guy at heart.”

Again, the NFL is a multi-billion-dollar league, and fans expect commentators and broadcasts to be run at as high a standard as they expect their teams to perform. When they don’t, fans can feel cheated, like this fan who said, “Kirk Herbstreit is an idiot. Doesn’t even know what draft class Kyler Murray was in or what draft pick he was. Some of these announcers are just stealing money.”

Amazon Prime is the newest platform to take over a weekly broadcast, and mistakes can give the streaming service a bad reputation for broadcast quality. This fan explained, “Kirk Herbstreit calls Thursday Night games like a podcaster who memorized four stats and is going to get to those four stats no matter what. Except occasionally a player he remembers from college will do something and then he is ALL IN.”

Another fan showed how ridiculous it was for the color commentator to suggest Murray and Mayfield were in the same draft, posting, “According to Kirk Herbstreit: Baker Mayfield (number 1 overall pick) and Kyler Murray (number 1 overall pick) were in the same draft class!”

While Herbstreit has been a solid commentator at the college level, separating the two football levels seems tough at times for the College Gameday star.
Given the buzz the mistakes have generated online, Amazon Prime will likely need to address the situation to ensure that some of these mistakes do not happen again.
