If you were to walk into Friday’s Avalanche practice not knowing what time of the season it was, you might think it was mid or even closer to the playoffs. The intensity is high and the team is ready to get at it.

From the first line down, everyone was skating hard and exhibited a healthy level of competition for a preseason practice. And they’re still having fun.

First Takeaway: Scott Wedgewood looks really good. He changed his conditioning this summer (story coming soon) and looks confident and strong between the pipes. He’s expected to start the season while Mackenzie Blackwood continues to rehab from a lower-body injury.

Second Takeaway: Sparks were flying on the ice. Not just from skate blades but between teammates. The importance of training camp and preseason is to create chemistry and you can see it happening.

The Ross Colton — Jack Drury — Victor Olofsson line looks solid. It’s a possible line in Saturday’s matchup against the Dallas Stars.

Third Takeaway: A speedometer should be available for post-practice shots. Martin Necas has a powerful one, and you could see/hear it as we were waiting to get into the room.

If only there were a speedometer on the net. Martin Necas has a pretty hard shot. #GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/C7hicU2wGX

Inside the Locker Room Side Notes: Brent Burns is as advertised. Finally got a chance to chat with him and he is as genuine as they get. Most surprising fact I learned about him is that he thought he was an early bird but this team has changed his perspective. He said he shows up at the parking lot thinking he’s going to be the first car there and the lot is already full. That’s the dedication and work ethic he is experiencing with this team.
