NEW YORK — New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles after getting hit on his left forearm by a 97 mph sinker from Grant Wolfram.

Chisholm immediately walked to the dugout to be tended to by Yankees trainers after getting drilled in the arm on the first pitch of his at-bat in the fifth inning. He was replaced in the game by José Caballero, who pinch ran for Chisholm at first base. Chisholm had a scare earlier in the game after taking a tumble at second base on a throw that left fielder Cody Bellinger airmailed, causing Chisholm to fall on top of Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson, but he remained in the game after that play.

The Yankees are still in a heated race for the American League East title with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees could clinch the division with wins on Saturday and Sunday against the Orioles and a loss by the Blue Jays in their final two games, or a victory by the Yankees in either of their final two games and losses by Toronto in both of their final games.

Losing Chisholm would be a critical blow for the Yankees. He’s statistically been their best defender this season at any position, with eight outs above average at second base. He also became the third player in franchise history to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases.

If Chisholm does have to miss any time, it’s expected that Caballero would become the primary second baseman. Caballero is not as good a hitter as Chisholm, but he does lead MLB with 48 stolen bases.
